The reopening of McDonald’s outlets in Ukraine is subject to negotiations by the ministry of foreign affairs. With the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, McDonald’s, like many other corporations, ceased the operation of its restaurants in Ukraine for security reasons, as Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba noted on Facebook. The MFA actively urges the company to return since they believe that the circumstances are currently favourable for doing so.
“A few weeks ago, we contacted the Ukrainian office and then McDonald’s headquarters in the United States. We also raised this issue during official talks with the U.S. Government as McDonald’s is one of the most famous American brands. The process is moving,” Kuleba said.
On May 24, 1997, the Kyiv location of the first McDonald’s restaurant in Ukraine opened. In 25 Ukrainian cities, the company operates more than 100 restaurants. Due to security concerns, they are currently closed.
