The transportation of items subject to EU sanctions across Lithuanian territory to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad will be prohibited starting on Saturday, according to Lithuanian authorities. The region’s governor, Anton Alikhanov, tweeted a video on Friday announcing the ban.

Coal, metals, building supplies, and cutting-edge technology are all on the EU sanctions list, and according to Alikhanov, the restriction would apply to about half of Kaliningrad’s imports.

Following “clarification” from the European Commission on the procedure for implementing the fines, the cargo division of Lithuania’s state railroads service confirmed its impending launch in a letter to customers.

Alikhanov urged people not to buy in a hurry, pointing out that two ships were already transporting products between Kaliningrad and Saint Petersburg and that seven more will be operational by the year’s end. he declared, “Our ferries will carry all the goods.”

A representative for Lithuania’s train company acknowledged the letter’s contents but would not provide any other information. A request for comment from Reuters received no response from the foreign ministry.

Mantas Adomenas, the deputy foreign minister of Lithuania, said that his government was awaiting “clarification from the European Commission on implementing European sanctions on Kaliningrad freight transit.”
