North Korea on high alert for torrential floods

SEOUL: North Korea announced on Tuesday that it is exerting its utmost effort to avert potential harm from this week’s torrential rains, which international experts fear will exacerbate the country’s economic problems in the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic.

North Korea is one of the poorest countries in Asia. Its agriculture and other industries are often hurt by summer floods, which are caused by problems with drainage and cutting down trees.

In addition to pandemic-related limitations and United Nations sanctions, typhoons and torrential rains in the year 2020 were cited by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as having caused “many crises” at home.

Meteorologists in North Korea said that this year’s rainy season would start in late June, and they issued warnings for most of the country from Monday through Wednesday.

The official Korean news agency reported on Tuesday that authorities in the central and southwestern regions of the North are mobilising all available resources to prepare for potential flood-related damage.

As per a Korean news agency, officials and employees were protecting crops, manufacturing equipment, power plant infrastructure, and fishing boats from heavy rain.

It was said that the nation’s agency for dealing with disasters was looking at how ready emergency workers and medical workers were.

Korean news agency reported that during the country’s monsoon season, North Korean officials are pushing citizens and workers to adhere to pandemic-related restrictions.

It was stated that more than 106,000 medical and hygiene personnel were prepared to address any serious health risks caused by flooding.

According to a Korean news agency, officials are ensuring anti-epidemic security at shelters for those evacuated from flood-damaged areas.

According to South Korea’s weather office, the majority of North Korea has been experiencing severe rainfall since Sunday.
