Russia is halting its gas supply as of Wednesday, according to Denmark’s largest energy firm, because it refused to pay in roubles.

For refusing to pay in Russian money, Russia already stopped off supplies to Finland, Poland, and Bulgaria.

Yesterday, supplies to the Netherlands were also cut off.

Orsted, a Danish energy company, says it will continue to serve its customers.

“We stand firm in our refusal to pay in roubles and we’ve been preparing for this scenario,” said CEO Mads Nipper.

“The situation underpins the need of the EU becoming independent of Russian gas by accelerating the build-out of renewable energy.”

Because there is no direct connection from Russia to Denmark, supplies cannot be cut, but Orsted claims that this means Denmark will have to buy more gas on the European market.

While its own Tyra oil field in the North Sea is being rebuilt, Denmark now imports around 75% of its gas from Germany.
