Russia has begun handing over the bodies of Ukrainian fighters slain at the Azovstal steelworks, a fortress-like factory in Mariupol’s ruined city that became a symbol of resistance to Moscow’s invasion.
Hundreds of bodies were removed from the bombed-out mill’s now–Russian-controlled ruins.

The Azov Regiment was one of the Ukrainian forces that defended the steelworks for nearly three months until succumbing to Russian ground, naval, and air attacks in May.
There was no way of knowing how many bodies were still at the site.
