As the Kremlin pushed for control of the eastern Donbas region, Ukrainian troops were involved in severe street battle with Russian soldiers in the industrial city of Sievierodonetsk, while neighbouring cities were constantly shelled.
As the invasion goes on in a war of attrition that has seen cities laid waste by artillery barrages, Sievierodonetsk has become the major objective of the Russian offensive in the Donbas, which includes the provinces of Luhansk and Donetsk.
In his nightly video message on Monday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy remarked, “Fierce street violence continues in the city.”
At a press conference, Zelenskiy informed reporters, “They outnumber us, they are more powerful.” However, he said that Ukraine’s military have “every opportunity” of fighting back.

According to Ukraine’s defence ministry, Russia is also sending troops and equipment to Luhansk, the largest remaining Ukrainian-held city.
The situation had worsened, according to Luhansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai, after Ukrainian soldiers had beaten back the Russians over the weekend as they appeared to be on the verge of triumph.
The Ukrainian military claimed in its nightly update that two people were killed in Russian shelling in the Donetsk and Luhansk areas on Monday, and that Russian forces had shot at over 20 localities.
The enemy fired from planes and helicopters in the Donetsk region, in addition to artillery strikes, Ukraine’s general command reported on Tuesday.
The battlefield accounts could not be independently verified by Reuters. Russia denies that people are being targeted in the conflict.
