Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler will travel to Turkey on Wednesday for the first time since the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the kingdom’s Istanbul consulate in 2018.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met in Ankara one month before US Vice President Joe Biden went to Riyadh for a regional meeting on the energy crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

One year before a general election that offers one of the greatest tests of Erdogan’s two-decade leadership, the living conditions of Turks are collapsing.
After Khashoggi was killed, Erdogan’s government, which is based on Islam, slowly released gory details about the murder, which embarrassed the Saudi crown prince.
But today, in the wake of the Arab Spring uprisings, it is soliciting investment and central bank support from the exact countries it opposed ideologically.
Soner Cagaptay, a Turkey researcher at the Washington Institute, stated, “I think this is probably one of the most significant visits to Ankara by a foreign leader in almost a decade.”
