‘Scotland would lose its membership in European Union’, says Sturgeon

• Scotland’s First Minister has said that the UK Government is moving Scotland in the “wrong direction” following the 2014 independence referendum.
• She has written to Prime Minister Boris Johnson to ask for formal approval for such a vote.

Remarks by Nicola Sturgeon came after she recommended the date of October 19, 2023, for another independence vote in Parliament on Tuesday.

Ms Sturgeon has written to Prime Minister Boris Johnson to ask for formal approval for the vote, but she has said she will go ahead with her plan if this is not granted.

The morning following the announcement, the First Minister stated on a British news agency that there had been “significant changes” since the 2014 referendum and that the UK Government is moving Scotland in the “wrong direction.”

The First Minister stated, “At the time [in 2014], we were told that Scotland would lose its membership in the European Union if it voted for independence, and now we are out of the European Union because we did not become independent — this is against our will.

We were warned that the possibility of Boris Johnson becoming Prime Minister was absurd; while this may have been true, it is now a reality.

And again, a Westminster government is dragging us down the wrong path, producing the worst cost-of-living crisis in the developed world as a result of Brexit, and Scotland is expected to claim nothing can be done.

“Scottish democracy cannot be a prisoner to Boris Johnson or any UK Prime Minister. The people of Scotland must have a right to choose.“

John Swinney, the deputy first minister, stated this morning following the announcement that if Scotland were to proceed with a referendum through a general election, a majority of SNP MPs would be elected in that election.

In response to this declaration, the leader of the Scottish Lib Dems, Alex Cole-Hamilton, tweeted, “This is possible with only 35% of the vote.”

“Talk about gaming the system. Good luck with getting international recognition for that.“
