WASHINGTON: The US military claimed to have conducted a “kinetic strike” against a leader of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hurras al-Din jihadist group in the Syrian province of Idlib on Monday.
“Abu Hamzah al Yemeni was travelling alone on a motorcycle at the time of the strike,” the US Central Command said in a statement, adding that “initial review indicates no civilian casualties.”
Centcom stated, “The removal of this senior leader will disrupt Al-Qaeda’s ability to carry out attacks against US citizens, our partners, and innocent civilians around the world.”
The US is “highly confident” that Abu Hamzah al Yemeni was killed by the drone hit, a US official with knowledge of the operation told an international news agency on condition of anonymity.
This was the second time in June that the United States targeted a leading extremist in Syria.
Hani Ahmed Al-Kurdi, a leader of the Islamic State (IS) group, was seized by US forces in Aleppo province on June 16.
On February 3, they murdered IS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi during an operation in the Idlib provincial region of Atme.
