According to authorities, more than 50 individuals were shot in Chicago during Memorial Day weekend. According to investigators, over half of the shootings occurred on the city’s West Side, where four persons were shot in the downtown area. On the city’s South Side, at least 23 people were killed.

The number of victims has eclipsed the total number of casualties for all of 2021’s Memorial Day shootings. 37 people were shot, three of whom died. Over the long holiday weekend, 51 individuals were shot.

It was the city’s bloodiest Memorial Day weekend since 2017 when 45 people were injured and seven were murdered.

A 25-year-old guy was killed after being shot on a sidewalk on East 93rd Street Monday evening. During the incident, two additional people were hurt. On Monday afternoon, another man was shot and died inside a home on South Green Street.

On Sunday morning, one gunshot occurred after a brawl broke out on the West Side, injuring a few persons. During the incident, a 16-year-old girl was shot in the back, as were two 21-year-old males, a 21-year-old woman, and a 33-year-old guy.

Chicago was bracing for a violent weekend and had implemented Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Police Superintendent David Brown’s holiday safety plan.

“Having to work was a little stressful, I would say,” Damian Alfaro, a fresh police graduate. “I worked 11 consecutive days, but it’s all part of the learning process.”
