According to reports, a Greek man imprisoned for smothering his wife to death in front of their newborn girl was attacked by an inmate who intended to kill him.

Babis Anagnostopoulos, 34, was given a life sentence for the murder of Caroline Crouch, 20, at their house in a posh district of Athens in May.

He pushed a pillow against her head as she slept with Lydia, her 11-month-old daughter, before staging the crime scene to make it appear as though they had been robbed by a band of vicious robbers.

Three Albanians handcuffed and gagged the pilot and made off with £40,000 in cash and jewellery, the pilot informed detectives.

His story was shattered, however, when data from his smartwatch revealed that he had been moving back and forth between his attic and basement.

The alleged prison assault occurred just weeks after Anagnostopoulos was transferred from a high-security prison in Athens to another facility in central Greece.

According to his lawyer, Alexandros Papaioannidis, guards only narrowly managed to remove the inmate before he inflicted more serious damage.

‘Reports claim he said “I want to kill him,”‘ Mr Papaioannidis told. I was transferred from another prison. The phrases “I’ve been looking for him” and “I’ve been looking for him” are accurate.

‘He is very worried the new jail houses around 900 hardened criminals and is very hard, very tough.’

Anagnostopoulos had reportedly appealed not to be transferred, citing death threats and security concerns, according to local media.

He is alleged to have spent his first few days in solitary confinement at the new prison before being assigned to a cell with three other inmates.

The murderer, who admitted to the crime in June, plans to appeal his sentence, claiming that judges erred in rejecting his claim that he acted “in the heat of the moment” after a disagreement with Caroline about their daughter.

He’ll also argue that the couple’s marriage counsellor’s testimony should be thrown out because she wasn’t ‘qualified’ to provide it.

The 34-year-old was ‘aware of his activities throughout the murder,’ according to the judges.
