The Platform for Reconstruction, which brings the EU and Ukraine together, should aid Ukraine’s transition to the EU. According to a journalist, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen made a similar comment after meeting with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.

Many subjects were discussed during the discussion with Ukraine’s President, according to Ursula von der Leyen, including joint work on the Platform for Ukraine’s Reconstruction.

“We want to build a shared direction of travel with the support of this platform,” said the European Commission President, “to have a clear road map of how to coordinate our joint work on the rehabilitation of Ukraine to help it rise from the rubble.”

According to her, Ukraine should take the lead in this process, while the European Commission has vast experience managing similar scenarios and reform investments.

She went on to say that Ukraine was already on its way to joining the EU before Russia’s “terrible cruel invasion” began.

Ursula von der Leyen further stated that the President of Ukraine had highlighted the necessity for the Ukrainian government to take additional efforts to improve the rule of law and combat corruption.

“More needs to be done. Understand me correctly. Ukraine is at war now, so your efforts and our support are focused on overcoming this terrible war. And through reconstruction, we want to see how we will move forward and what needs to be done. For example, you have done a lot to strengthen the rule of law, but there are still reforms that need to be implemented to, for example, fight corruption,” she said.
