A teenager is in danger of losing a part of her leg after a shark attack on a famous beach as per the international news agency.
The news source reported, citing local authorities, that the youngster was swimming off the coast of Florida when she was attacked.
Addison Bethea was attacked by a shark on June 30 in Florida, according to her father, Shane Bethea’s Facebook post.
She was swimming in 5-foot-deep water 75 miles southeast of Tallahassee when the shark bit her leg.
“The shark bit her once and then attacked her again on her right thigh. She tried poking it in the eyes and punching it but it would not turn loose,” Facebook post from his father.
“By the grace of God, she was with her brother Rhett Willingham, who is a first responder/firefighter, who acted quickly to literally fight off the shark and pull her away and into a nearby boat of an unknown person (thank you to whoever you are),” Mr Bethea said.
Mr Willingham used a tourniquet and kept her awake to save her life.
The teen has transported 80 miles away to Tallahassee for emergency surgery.
Doctors stabilised Addison before treating her leg, per the Facebook post.
To restore blood flow to her foot and lower leg, they had to cut a vein from her left leg. The thigh nerve was damaged.
Doctors are unsure of the leg’s condition and will assess it every day to determine the next steps.
“She woke up and was communicating to us through typing on her phone. She was in good spirits and cracking jokes about beating up the shark. They came in a little later and decided that she was good enough that they could extubate her. The first thing she asked for was a Wendy’s frosty,” Bethea said.
According to the reports, Florida has 40% of the world’s shark attacks.
