The decision by Canada to return the Nord Stream turbine to Germany—which was actually sent in breach of sanctions—will never be accepted by Ukrainians.
This was said by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a televised message to the country.
“Today I chatted with Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada. Naturally, we spoke about our collaboration, and I thanked him and Canada for their assistance,” Zelensky said.
While stating that “Ukrainians would never accept Canada’s decision over the Nord Stream turbine, which was chosen to be given to Germany in breach of the sanctions system,” the president also made it clear that.
“This is not just about the turbine. This is about complying with sanctions. If there is one violation now, it’s only a matter of time before others will follow. Russia is doing this on purpose, blackmailing others with gas and provoking sanction breaches,” the president said.
The head of state asserts that there are sufficient channels for Russian gas to be transported to Europe and that each nation should uphold moral standards.
As previously reported, Canada has chosen to send a Siemens Energy AG gas turbine that was produced there and utilised in the Nord Stream pipeline system back to Germany.
Despite opposition from the Ukrainian government and a sizable Ukrainian community in Canada, who emphasised that returning the turbine would undermine the sanctions regime, the decision was adopted. Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, announced on Saturday that a temporary export permission had been approved following extensive consultations with allies in Europe and the International Energy Agency.
