Joe Biden says Vladimir Putin is to blame for whatever happens in Russia
In response to the news of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, being killed, US President Joe Biden suggested on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin might be linked to the killing, implying that Putin is involved in various occurrences within the country.
Prigozhin’s death reportedly occurred when a private plane he was on was shot down by Russian defense forces, resulting in the deaths of nine other individuals on board, as confirmed by officials.
A Telegram channel associated with Prigozhin’s private military company stated that the Embraer aircraft was brought down by air defenses in the Tver region, situated north of Moscow, while en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg. The plane had seven passengers and three crew members.
Biden shared his thoughts with reporters following a family exercise session near Lake Tahoe.
While addressing the demise of the 62-year-old billionaire, the Democratic presidential candidate remarked, “There’s not much that happens in Russia that [President Vladimir] Putin is not behind.”
He continued, “I don’t know for a fact what happened, but I’m not surprised.”
“I don’t have enough information to determine the specifics of what might have occurred to the influential former associate of Putin,” stated the 80-year-old.
Russian media indicated that Prigozhin’s name was on the passenger list of the crashed aircraft, which went down northwest of Moscow.
The crash incident took place two months after Prigozhin initiated a brief, unsuccessful rebellion with Wagner, aiming to challenge the country’s military leadership and influence.
During a visit to Helsinki last month, Biden humorously cautioned Prigozhin, whose Wagner force has played a significant role in the conflict in Ukraine, to be cautious about his actions after the thwarted rebellion.
“If I were he, I’d be careful what I ate. I’d keep my eye on my menu,” Biden jokingly remarked.
White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson also mentioned on Wednesday that if confirmed, Prigozhin’s sudden death shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Watson referenced the June uprising and Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, noting, “The disastrous war in Ukraine led to a private army marching on Moscow, and now — it would seem — to this.”
