Bobi, World’s Oldest Dog Ever, Passes Away at 31
Bobi, the world’s oldest dog ever, has passed away at the remarkable age of 31 years and 165 days.
Guinness World Record holder Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, peacefully departed at his home in Portugal over the weekend.
The sad news was shared on social media by a veterinarian who had the privilege of meeting Bobi on several occasions.
Dr. Karen Becker, the veterinarian, paid tribute to Bobi, noting, “Despite outliving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on Earth could never be enough for those who loved him.”
In February, Bobi achieved the prestigious titles of the world’s oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever, surpassing a century-old record for the latter accolade.
The previous record-holder, Australia’s Bluey, lived to be 29 years and five months before passing away in 1939.
The longevity of Bobi’s life was officially confirmed by the Portuguese government’s pet database, which is overseen by the National Union of Veterinarians.
The search for Bobi’s successor as the world’s oldest living dog is still underway.
Bobi spent his entire life with the Costa family in the village of Conqueiros, near Portugal’s western coast.
He was born with three siblings in an outbuilding, and after a fortunate escape from being put down due to excess animals, he became an integral part of the Costa family.
They provided him with the same food they ate and kept his existence a secret from their parents until he was eventually discovered and welcomed into the family.
Leonel Costa, who was eight years old when Bobi joined the family, stated that Bobi had a relatively trouble-free life, except for a health scare in 2018 when he was hospitalized due to breathing difficulties.
According to Mr. Costa, the secret to Bobi’s longevity lay in the “calm, peaceful environment” he enjoyed.
Nevertheless, in his final days, Bobi faced challenges with walking and declining eyesight.
Bobi was not the only long-lived canine in the Costa family. Bobi’s mother lived to the age of 18, and another of their dogs reached the ripe age of 22.
