On Saturday, tragedy struck as three Bangladeshi tourists lost their lives in India’s Kashmir region when a fire erupted among the idyllic houseboats adorning Dal Lake, according to a police official.
The incident began with a blaze in one houseboat during the early hours and rapidly engulfed nearby moored boats, as reported by the police.
“Three tourists Bangladeshi nationals were killed in one of the five houseboats destroyed due to fire,” the police official said, adding that seven others were injured.
An initial investigation revealed that the fire resulted from faulty electrical wiring, as confirmed by the official.
Government statistics indicate that in 2022, the Jammu and Kashmir region welcomed over 16.2 million tourists—a historic high since the end of British colonial rule in 1947.
Renowned for its snow-capped Himalayan peaks, rapid-flowing rivers, meadows, and charming wooden houseboats on picturesque lakes, the region’s booming tourism serves as a positive development for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.
In 2019, the government revoked the special rights of Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir, integrating it into the rest of the country.
It’s worth noting that Hindu-majority India has been contending with a protracted separatist Islamist insurgency in Kashmir, a territory also claimed by neighboring Pakistan.
