A Barbarians rugby player, Api Ratuniyarawa, aged 37, faced charges of sexual assault, including sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault by touching, during an appearance before Cardiff magistrates on Saturday.

He has denied allegations of sexually assaulting three women at Revolution bar located on Castle Street in Cardiff between October 31 and November 1.

Ratuniyarawa had been previously included in the Barbarians’ squad ahead of their game against Wales in Cardiff, but his participation is now in question.

The Fiji international, hailing from West Northamptonshire, spoke only to confirm his identity during the court hearing.

Prosecutor Michael Evans told the court: “The three incidents happened independently of each other, with the women not known to each other or to the defendant before that night.”

Magistrate Peter Hamley subjected the London Irish forward to “stringent bail” conditions, including an electronic curfew between the hours of 19:00 and 07:00.

Furthermore, he has been prohibited from entering Wales except for court-related matters, forbidden from contacting any witnesses involved in the case, and barred from accessing any licensed establishments.

The case is scheduled to be transferred to Cardiff Crown Court for further proceedings on December 4th.

In a statement, Barbarian FC said: “As soon as we were contacted by South Wales Police we cooperated fully, assisting them with their enquiries.

“On their advice we can’t comment any further as the investigation is ongoing.”
