A Chinese official called for Myanmar to collaborate with China to preserve stability along their shared border on Monday.
This statement came in the wake of heightened conflict in Myanmar, as junta forces clashed with insurgents in the region.
Myanmar’s ruling military acknowledged its efforts to restore order near the border, following a series of coordinated attacks on junta targets by an alliance of ethnic minority armies striving for self-determination last week.
Nong Rong, Assistant Chinese Foreign Minister, stated, “Myanmar is called on to cooperate with China to maintain stability along the China-Myanmar border, earnestly ensure the safety of the lives and property of Chinese border residents, and take effective measures to strengthen the security of Chinese personnel.”
A spokesperson for Myanmar’s ruling military was not immediately available for comment.
Reportedly, an incident on Saturday resulted in the death of one Chinese citizen, and several others were wounded when a shell fired by the Myanmar military overshot its target and landed on the Chinese side of the border.
Nong, who had visited Myanmar from November 3 to November 5, expressed China’s hope for Myanmar to restore stability.
He also voiced support for all parties in handling their differences properly and achieving reconciliation through dialogue as swiftly as possible.
Meanwhile, Thailand is actively working to repatriate 162 of its nationals who have been caught in the crossfire of the conflict in Myanmar.
Myanmar has been grappling with turmoil since a military coup in February 2021 ousted a democratically elected government led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
Pro-democracy insurgent groups in some areas have joined forces with ethnic minority guerrillas, who have been advocating for greater autonomy and have been in conflict with junta forces for decades.
China, along with Russia, has extended its support to the generals while Western governments have denounced the Myanmar military and imposed sanctions.
China emphasizes supporting Myanmar in finding its path and urges the international community to respect the country’s sovereignty.
China’s foreign ministry conveyed its close monitoring of the conflict in Myanmar and urged all parties to immediately cease hostilities, resolve differences through peaceful dialogue and consultation, and avoid further escalation, according to spokesperson Wang Wenbin in a regular press briefing.
Nong called upon Myanmar to enhance the security of Chinese institutions and projects within its borders during his visit.
He also visited a 793-kilometer natural gas pipeline, a component of China’s Belt and Road infrastructure and energy network, connecting Ramree Island on the west coast of Myanmar to the Chinese border city of Ruili in Yunnan Province.
