Donald Trump engaged in multiple disputes with a judge and defended his family’s business during his testimony in a civil fraud trial in New York.

The former president, who spent nearly four hours on the witness stand, refuted allegations that he deceived banks and aired his grievances regarding the case.

The trial, in which the Trump Organization has been found to have committed fraud, will determine the penalties imposed. Prosecutors are seeking a $250 million fine and significant business restrictions.

Trump, the current frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, was questioned about the valuation of various properties, including Mar-a-Lago in Florida, Trump Tower in New York, and his Scottish golf course during his highly anticipated appearance in a Manhattan federal courthouse.

These properties are among those prosecutors claim were intentionally overvalued in company statements to secure better loans and insurance policies.

Trump stood by the valuations during his testimony, describing them as “very conservative” and stating that he is worth billions of dollars more than the financial statements indicate.

He also emphasized that his brand boosted property values, a factor he claimed was not considered in the financial statements.

The lawsuit, brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, accuses Trump, along with his sons Eric and Donald Jr and other Trump Organization executives, of deliberately inflating company assets over the years. All defendants deny any wrongdoing.

Trump’s testimony was marked by heated exchanges and lengthy responses, leading to rebukes from Judge Arthur Engoron, who appeared exasperated at times.

The judge will ultimately decide the trial’s outcome and could impose a multi-million dollar fine and business restrictions on the defendants.

Trump pointed to the Trump Organization accountants as responsible for the financial reports and claimed he only authorized and provided the necessary information for the accountants to create the statements during his testimony.

Trump’s combative approach on the stand has generated speculation among legal and political analysts, with some suggesting it is a calculated strategy, while others see it as an opportunity for campaigning. Ivanka Trump is expected to testify later in the trial.

The civil case in New York is just one of several legal battles Trump is facing. He also faces four criminal indictments related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, handling classified documents, and false accounting involving hush money.
