Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has suggested that Italy’s plan to build migrant reception centres in Albania could serve as a model for cooperation between the European Union (EU) and non-member countries in managing migration flows.

This groundbreaking agreement involves Albania hosting migrants on behalf of Italy and is the first of its kind. Meloni has informed the European Commission about the initiative, and the EU body has not expressed any negative feedback.

The Albanian centres will initially accommodate around 3,000 people, with plans to increase their capacity to process up to 36,000 migrants annually.

Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama emphasized the history of friendship between Italy and Albania and expressed gratitude for Italy’s support during the 1990s.

It highlights potential cooperation between EU and non-EU countries to address migration challenges while the practical implementation of the deal is still pending.

Rama acknowledged the complexities of negotiating repatriation agreements with African nations for failed asylum seekers.
