Hatred targeting the global Jewish community has witnessed a concerning surge in the wake of the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, followed by the extensive Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip.

These incidents encompass a range of behaviors, including verbal harassment, online slurs, threats, graffiti, and physical assaults.

Frequently, these actions exploit the Gaza conflict as a pretext for hostility toward Jews. Reports also suggest that some countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, have experienced an increase in Islamophobic incidents during this period.

The heightened intensity of the Gaza conflict and the trauma associated with October 7 have left many Jewish individuals feeling more fearful and insecure.

A consistent pattern has emerged. Hate crimes against the Jewish community have surged by 100% compared to the same period in the previous year in countries like the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and South Africa in places where data is accessible.

Most of these incidents involve verbal abuse, online slurs, threats, graffiti, and vandalism targeting Jewish properties, businesses, or religious sites, with physical assaults also making up a significant portion.

A common theme is that anger over the loss of Palestinian lives due to Israel’s actions in Gaza is invoked as a justification for verbal or physical aggression against Jews in general. This often involves the use of derogatory language and stereotypes rooted in a long history of anti-Semitism.

Anthony Adler, a 62-year-old resident in London’s Golders Green, a neighborhood with a substantial Jewish population, expressed, “This is the scariest time to be Jewish since World War Two.”

He temporarily closed two of the three Jewish schools he manages due to fears of attacks on students and increased security measures across all three.

The current climate of fear is more pronounced for many Jews than in previous instances of rising anti-Semitism linked to Middle East conflicts, owing to the intensity of the Gaza conflict and the trauma associated with October 7.

Notably, the most alarming global incident involved the storming of an airport in Russia’s Dagestan region by an enraged crowd looking to harm Jews following a flight from Tel Aviv.

Rabbi Alexander Boroda, president of Russia’s Federation of Jewish Communities, remarked that anti-Israel sentiment had transformed into open aggression against Russian Jews.

Shneor Segal, the chief Ashkenazi rabbi of Azerbaijan, emphasized that “antisemites will use any excuse—the current Middle East crisis being just the latest—to terrorize the dwindling numbers of us that remain” in the Caucasus.

Numerous incidents around the world highlight the anxieties and tensions affecting Jewish communities while not reaching such extreme levels.

For instance, in Buenos Aires, students at a prominent Jewish school were asked not to wear their regular uniforms to be less easily identifiable, and other schools canceled planned outings and activities.

Security measures were heightened around the Center for Jewish Living in response to online threats, including a bomb threat in upstate New York’s Cornell University.
