Malaysian killer freed from Australian immigration prison
A former Malaysian policeman convicted in connection to a notorious murder in Malaysia has been released from Australian immigration detention.
Sirul Azhar Umar was involved in the killing of Altantuya Shaariibuu, a model linked to ex-Prime Minister Najib Razak. Umar, a former police officer and bodyguard fled to Australia in 2015.
He had been held in immigration detention for almost nine years after his asylum claim was rejected in 2019. His release follows a recent landmark ruling by Australia’s High Court against indefinite immigration detention.
The Australian government won’t deport Umar to Malaysia due to concerns about potential execution. Altantuya Shaariibuu, a Mongolian, was murdered in 2006, and Umar, along with another officer, was convicted in 2009.
The case sparked political controversies and allegations of interference. Najib, accused of involvement, denies any connection to the case.
Abdul Razak Baginda, another associate, initially faced charges but they were dropped. Umar’s release has reignited interest in the complex and politically charged case. Malaysia recently abolished its mandatory death penalty.
