South Korea is intensifying its efforts to control and prevent the spread of bedbugs following reports of suspected infestations at saunas and residential facilities.

This move comes in response to growing concerns about the impact of bedbug outbreaks in other countries, such as France and the United Kingdom.

Approximately 30 cases of suspected bedbug infestations have been reported, including incidents at a traditional Korean spa in Incheon and a college dorm in Daegu South Korea.

The prime minister’s office has initiated a four-week campaign that includes inspections of public facilities and pest control measures to address this issue.

Park Ku-yeon, the first deputy chief of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, emphasized the vulnerability of small dorm rooms known as “gosiwon” and single-room households, calling for support from district authorities.

Bedbugs, small flat oval insects that hide in mattresses and bedding and feed on blood, typically bite at night.

South Korea’s hotel and tourism industry is also taking measures to combat the potential bedbug problem. This includes distributing repellent and providing staff training.

Lotte Hotels and Resorts, a hospitality branch of Lotte Corp, issued guidelines to all branches and plans to disinfect bedding, mattresses, carpets, and sofas as a precautionary step.

Metro operators are increasing the frequency of train disinfection and gradually replacing fabric seats with plastic ones in Seoul.

Taxi drivers are required to disinfect their vehicles twice a day, and similar control measures are being implemented on buses to address the concerns related to bedbugs.
