Suella Braverman is once again making headlines, this time due to her removal from the position of home secretary in the United Kingdom.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak dismissed Braverman amid accusations that she fueled tensions and racial animosity surrounding Armistice Day protests.

She faced criticism for asserting that London police favored left-wing pro-Palestine protesters, spreading fake news, and making unverified claims about attacks on Pakistani men in the country.

Leading up to her ousting, the Tory MP drew condemnation from various quarters, including the Labour Party, Muslim groups, left-wing factions, Jewish communities, migrant groups, and even moderate sections of her party, owing to her inflammatory statements and intentional provocations.

Amid the public discourse following her dismissal, questions arose about Braverman’s ethnicity. Notably, the 43-year-old anti-immigrant politician is the child of immigrant parents. She advocates for the deportation of immigrants and their incarceration abroad despite her background.

Born as Sue-Ellen Fernandes in Harrow, north-west London, Braverman is the only child of Christie Fernandes, a Kenyan of Christian Goan origin, and Uma Fernandes, a Mauritian of Indian descent, who arrived in the UK in the 1960s.

Initially named after the character Sue Ellen Ewing from the 1980s US television drama Dallas, she adopted the name Suella after teachers started using it. She attended Heathfield School in outer London on a partial scholarship.

Braverman pursued law at Queens’ College, Cambridge, where she became president of the university Conservative Association.

She also studied for two years at the Sorbonne in France. Before entering full-time politics, she practiced as a barrister in both the UK and the US.

Braverman secured a place in the Commons in 2015 despite losing her first election in 2005. In 2018, under then-Prime Minister Theresa May, she became a junior Brexit minister. Just two years later, under Boris Johnson’s leadership, she ascended to her first cabinet role as attorney general.

She changed her surname to Braverman after marrying Rael Braverman, a Mercedes-Benz manager whom she describes as a “proud Jew and Zionist” in 2018. Braverman’s controversial statements have consistently kept her at the center of public attention throughout her career.
