A new Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals a close race in a potential 2024 rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, with both candidates facing significant vulnerabilities.

The poll conducted in December 2023 shows Trump with a narrow 2-point lead over Biden, with 38% support compared to Biden’s 36%. However, a significant 26% remain undecided or open to other candidates, highlighting the potential for a third-party candidate to sway the election.

Trump’s lead is driven by his continued popularity among the Republican base, where he remains the clear frontrunner for the nomination. However, the poll also reveals widespread voter dissatisfaction with the two-party system, with nearly 60% of respondents expressing a desire for a third alternative.

This dissatisfaction could benefit independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has entered the race on an anti-vaccine platform. The poll suggests that Kennedy could draw more support from Biden voters than Trump voters, potentially tipping the scales in a close race.

When presented with the option of voting for Kennedy, Trump’s lead increases to 5 points, with 36% support for Trump, 31% for Biden, and 16% for Kennedy. This scenario underscores the potential impact of third-party candidates in US elections, mirroring historical examples like Ross Perot in 1992 and Ralph Nader in 2000.

The poll also highlights the importance of the Electoral College system, with a small number of key states likely to hold the deciding vote. This system could potentially amplify the impact of independent candidates like Kennedy, particularly in states with close margins between the two major parties.

While the 2024 election remains far off, the poll provides valuable insights into the current political landscape. It demonstrates the potential for a close and contested race, with both major candidates facing significant challenges. More importantly, it underscores the growing dissatisfaction with the two-party system and the potential impact of third-party candidates in the upcoming election.
