The European Union has officially declared its suspicion that X, formerly recognized as Twitter. They currently owned by Elon Musk, has violated its regulations, particularly in addressing illegal content and disinformation.
Thierry Breton, the digital commissioner, detailed these suspected violations in a post on the social media platform. Additionally, X is accused of failing to meet transparency obligations.
X said it was “cooperating with the regulatory process”.
In a statement, the firm said it was “important that this process remains free of political influence and follows the law”.
“X is focused on creating a safe and inclusive environment for all users on our platform while protecting freedom of expression, and we will continue to work tirelessly towards this goal,” it added.
In October, the European Union announced an investigation into X (formerly Twitter) regarding the potential spread of terrorist and violent content, as well as hate speech, following Hamas’ attack on Israel.
X responded at that time by stating that it had already removed numerous accounts associated with Hamas from its platform. This investigation marked the first instance under the EU’s new tech regulations, specifically the Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into effect in August.
According to the DSA, major tech companies operating in the EU are now subject to enhanced obligations aimed at safeguarding users.
Violations of these rules may lead to substantial fines or the suspension of services.
