Vladimir Putin will seek the presidency once more as an independent with a sizable following, but not on a party ticket, according to two prominent pro-Kremlin MPs quoted by the state-sponsored RIA news agency on Saturday.

Putin, who has held office for more than 20 years as prime minister or president, has declared that he will run for reelection in March of next year, a campaign that he is sure to win.

Senior UR party leader Andrei Turchak was quoted by RIA as saying that despite having the full backing of the ruling United Russia (UR) party, he will run as an independent candidate instead.

According to RIA, Putin will run as an independent and signatures will be gathered in his favor, according to Sergei Mironov, a prominent member of the Just Russia party.

For Putin, seventy-one, the election is a formality; he will undoubtedly prevail with the backing of the government, the state-run media, and virtually little opposition from the general public.

Putin’s supporters claim that his war in Ukraine, which he refers to as a “special military operation,” is justifiable and that he has brought back order, pride in the country, and some of the influence that Russia lost during the chaos of the Soviet collapse.

The space for dissent has rapidly decreased as a result of a years-long crackdown on opponents and critics, which was reinforced by wide new rules against “fake news” and “discrediting the army.” As a result, opponents of the war have been given lengthy prison sentences or have fled overseas.
