In the wake of the passing of Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, the former ruler of Kuwait, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has been officially named as the Gulf nation’s new emir. Born on September 27, 1940, Sheikh Mishal is the eighth son of Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the ninth ruler of the Sheikhdom of Kuwait.

Following his elementary education at Kuwait’s Al Mubarakiya School, Sheikh Mishal pursued further studies in Great Britain, enrolling at the prestigious Hendon Police College. Graduating in 1960, he subsequently joined the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior (MOI) and embarked on a career that would see him play a pivotal role within the Al-Sabah royal family.

In 2006, shortly after his half-brother Sabah assumed the throne, Sheikh Mishal emerged as one of the key decision-makers within the Al-Sabah royal family. Despite opportunities for more prominent positions, he opted to remain out of the political limelight, choosing instead to preserve family ties and avoid controversies.

In a significant move on April 17, 2023, Crown Prince Mishal declared the dissolution of the Kuwait National Assembly, citing legislation that granted the emir the authority to take such action in response to political unrest and deadlock in the country.

Sheikh Mishal has also represented Kuwait on the international stage, attending notable events such as the wedding of Hussein, the Crown Prince of Jordan, in 2023, and Queen Elizabeth II’s state burial at Westminster Abbey in London in 2022.

The ascension of Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to the throne marks a new chapter in Kuwait’s history, with the seasoned royal bringing with him a wealth of experience and a commitment to navigating the challenges that lie ahead. As Kuwait mourns the loss of Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, the nation looks toward its new emir with anticipation for the future.
