Maldives’ Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem, fell victim to a brutal stabbing by unidentified assailants in the capital city of Male on Wednesday morning. The attack unfolded against the backdrop of a deepening political crisis, characterized by a fierce standoff between the Maldivian government and the opposition.

Police reports indicate that the assailants did not employ a sharp object in the assault, leaving the details of the weapon used undisclosed. The incident adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing political turmoil, which intensified recently as the opposition seeks to impeach President Mohamed Muizzu.

The Maldives Parliament has been a scene of unrest, witnessing violence and disruptions during a crucial vote on the government’s approval. Members of Parliament aligned with the government reportedly caused disturbances, contributing to the growing tension within the political landscape.

This tumultuous situation follows criticism from two opposition parties, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats, who have expressed concern over the current regime’s perceived anti-India pivot. The opposition argues that such a foreign policy shift could be extremely detrimental to the country’s long-term development, emphasizing the importance of maintaining relationships with all development partners, especially long-standing allies like India.

The opposition’s stance is rooted in the belief that alienating key partners may impede the Maldives’ growth and stability. Stability and security in the Indian Ocean, according to the opposition, are crucial for the well-being of the Maldives, underscoring the need for consecutive governments to work with all development partners for the benefit of the Maldivian people.

In response to the escalating crisis, the attorney general’s office has reportedly filed a case with the Supreme Court regarding an amendment to Parliament’s orders, enabling opposition lawmakers to pursue the impeachment of the president. This legal move adds a new dimension to the ongoing power struggle within the Maldivian political landscape.

The situation remains fluid, and the international community will likely be closely monitoring developments in the Maldives as the country grapples with political instability and the aftermath of the shocking attack on the Prosecutor General.
