Former US President Donald Trump has asserted that Russia is a formidable “war machine” with a historical track record of defeating its enemies, citing examples such as Hitler and Napoleon. In an interview with Fox News, Trump expressed his opposition to arming Ukraine in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The 77-year-old Republican presidential forerunner emphasized Russia’s military prowess, stating, “I feel very bad… Remember this: you are really up against a war machine in Russia. [It’s] what they do. They’ve defeated Hitler, they’ve defeated Napoleon.” Trump, currently leading the GOP nomination bid, suggested that if he were still in the White House, the standoff between Ukraine and Russia would not have occurred, and he claimed he could end hostilities within 24 hours.

During a Town Hall discussion, Trump pointed out that the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war is primarily on Europe, not the United States, and urged European nations to do more to support Kyiv. He highlighted the geographical distance between the US and the conflict, stating, “We have an ocean in between us. They don’t have that ocean,” and suggested that the reason European nations have not contributed more is that “nobody asked them.”

While the US Senate recently passed a $95 billion aid package, including funds for Ukraine, its fate in the House of Representatives remains uncertain. House Speaker Mike Johnson’s decision not to bring it to a floor vote adds to the challenges faced by Kyiv.

Trump’s comments come in the context of a broader debate on US involvement and assistance in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In a social media post earlier this month, Trump criticized tying foreign aid to a border security bill, stating, “Don’t be STUPID!!! We need a separate Border and Immigration Bill. It should not be tied to foreign aid in any way, shape, or form!” He expressed concern that such a connection could be detrimental to the Republican Party.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to unfold, Trump’s perspective adds to the ongoing discourse surrounding the United States’ role in the international response to the conflict.
