A suicide bombing in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar has claimed at least 21 lives, as reported by a doctor at the regional hospital. The Taliban government has stated a death toll of three. Police have confirmed numerous injuries.
The Taliban stated that the suicide attack occurred at about 08:00 (03:30 GMT) in the city center at a bank. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which seems to be the largest in Afghanistan this year. The explosion happened at a branch where Afghan government employees were queuing to collect their salaries.
A doctor from Mirwais Hospital, the region’s largest medical facility, stated on the condition of anonymity that they have taken the dead and approximately 50 injured individuals. Kandahar, serving as the seat of power of the Taliban, is also the base of their supreme commander.
Although the Taliban gained complete control with the full withdrawal of foreign troops in 2021, the overall security situation in Afghanistan has improved. However, the country still experiences dozens of bombings and suicide attacks each year.
Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), the regional affiliate of the so-called Islamic State group, has claimed responsibility for many attacks targeting Afghanistan’s Hazara ethnic minority. These attacks, which have been a major focus of ISKP, represent a significant threat to the Taliban, their main rival.
