DPM Ishaq Dar arrives in New York for UNSC debate

The debate will focus on maintaining international peace and security

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar arrived in New York for an official visit from May 26 to 28.

He will attend a high level United Nations Security Council (UNSC) open debate during China’s presidency of the council. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the debate will focus on maintaining international peace and security and strengthening the global system built around the UN charter.

Upon arrival, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad and Consul General Aamer Ahmad Atozai welcomed him in New York. Officials said Dar will also meet representatives from several countries and senior United Nations officials during his visit. These meetings will cover regional and global issues along with areas of mutual cooperation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Pakistan supports China’s initiative for stronger multilateral cooperation and a more active role for the United Nations in solving global challenges. The UNSC debate carries the theme of protecting peace, strengthening international law, and improving the UN centered system.

During the visit, Dar will also take part in a meeting of the group of friends on Global Governance. The discussion will focus on reforming global governance and addressing shared international challenges. This visit comes shortly after his trip to Beijing, where he accompanied Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during diplomatic events marking 75 years of Pakistan, China relations.

Overall, the trip shows Pakistan’s continued focus on diplomatic dialogue and international partnership at important global platforms like the United Nations.
