Protests erupted after a video surfaced on social media showing a 46-year-old black man named George Floyd being strangled on the street of Minnesota (northern regions of the United States) by a police officer while the man was saying in a low voice. “I can’t breathe, don’t kill me.”

According to reports, shortly after the incident, the man was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance where he died.

Four police officers were immediately suspended after the video surfaced.

Minnesota police say George Floyd was working as a security guard at a hotel when he was found drunk on another person’s car and resisted when police asked him to get off.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched an investigation into the incident.

Mayor of Minneapolis stated in a Tweet, “If most people, particularly people of color, had done what a police officer did late Monday, they’d already be behind bars. That’s why today I’m calling on Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman to charge the arresting officer in this case.”

He further wrote, “There are precedents and protocols sitting in the reserves of institutions like this one that will give you about a thousand reasons not to do something. To not speak out. To not move so quickly.”

“But we can’t turn a blind eye. George Floyd deserves justice. The Black community deserves justice. His friends and family deserve Justice,” the mayor added.

The Mayor said earlier in his Tweet “Being Black in America should not be a death sentence. For five minutes, we watched a white officer press his knee into a Black man’s neck. Five minutes. This officer failed in the most basic, human sense.”
