Hammad underscores need for crafting WACOG legislation to meet gas demand

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Energy Hammad Azhar has underscored the need for crafting Weighted Average Cost of Gas (WACOG) legislation to meet an increased demand of the commodity especially in the peak winter season.

“During winter a demand spike occurs in the local gas circuit which cannot be plugged by imported LNG till WACOG legislation,” Hammad Azhar said in a tweet.

He said the country had two gas circuits in operation, under which 70 per cent was based on local gas and 30 per cent on imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

On November 21, the minister for energy had said the government was going to introduce virtual gas pipeline system of the LNG to overcome energy shortage in the country.

“The provision of gas to domestic consumers during the winter season is the first priority of the government,” he had said talking to a private news channel.

Hammad Azhar had said the government would receive two extra LNG cargoes in December to fulfill the requirement of the gas in the country.

The minister had said the consumption of gas increased three per cent in every winter season and the government was making all-out efforts to meet the domestic demand of gas.
