It was the story of two breakups: “Havana” singer Camila Cabello addresses her split from both her previous band and her former fiancé in a song from her recently released album Familia.
Cabello’s mental health struggles since her musical debut as a 15-year-old are chronicled in the album’s third song, the trippy electro-pop “psychofreak,” which features Willow Smith (now infamous for her TikTok anthem “Meet Me At Our Spot”) and Willow Smith (now infamous for her TikTok anthem “Meet Me At Our Spot”).
However, the song is also a not-so-subtle message to her followers about the tumultuous nature of her personal and professional relationships.
According to Reuters, a phrase in “psychofreak”—”I don’t blame the girls for how it went down”—is about her 2016 separation from Fifth Harmony.
“That song is really about anxiety and all of the many things that have built up, like my struggle with anxiety and starting out in the profession relatively early,” she explained to the site.
“After 4 and a half years of being together, we have been told via her agents that Camila has decided to quit Fifth Harmony,” the band’s official Twitter account wrote when the musical split was originally disclosed in December 2016. Cabello responded with her own statement less than three hours later:
“i was shocked to read the statement the fifth harmony account posted without my knowing. the girls were aware of my feelings through the long, much needed conversations about the future that we had during tour. Saying they were just informed through my representatives that i was ‘leaving the group’ is simply not true. just like the other girls said in their statement about their plans, i had also planned to continue with my own solo endeavors in the new year but i did not intend to end things with fifth harmony this way. as sad as it is to see this chapter ending this way, i will continued to root them all on as individuals and as a group, i wish nothing but the best for them, all the success in the world and true happiness.”
The new song appears to allude to these tangled dynamics while taking the target off the backs of her band mates. However, “psychofreak” has subtle parallels to Cabello’s breakup with boyfriend Shawn Mendes, much as it does with Fifth Harmony. Following their breakup in November 2021, the singer hinted in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1’s New Music Daily that the breakup was partly due to her mental health.
“Throughout my life, my priorities have shifted and my emphasis has shifted,” she explained. “I don’t even feel like, even when composing this record, and even now, I think, my attention is really on, how can I be a well-rounded person throughout those years that we were dating,” she says. …How might talking about these things help me gain people’s trust? How do I talk about the nasty things I haven’t talked about with anyone and then get to a point where these folks can validate my own experience because they’re like, ‘Oh yes, I absolutely understand.'”
Cabello sings, “Sometimes I don’t trust the way I feel…When we’re makin’ love, I want to be there / And I want to feel you pullin’ my hair / And believe the words you say in my ear,” in “psychofreak,” on her mistrust of those around her, particularly romantic partners.
This isn’t the first time Cabello has spoken up about her anxiety in recent years. “I was cripplingly worried and was in the worst mental health situation ever,” she said in another interview with People when she initially started making Familia.
“For me, if this process doesn’t help me feel better, and if it’s not me being honest, vulnerable, and unfiltered, I don’t see how this is going to happen,” she said later. That was my plan all along: to just be myself, whatever that meant at the time.”
