On Saturday, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi arrived in Fiji for an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral and regional collaboration between the two nations.

According to a statement released by the Fijian government on Saturday night, during a meeting between Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, who is also Fiji’s Foreign Minister, and the visiting Japanese foreign minister, Bainimarama praised Japan for its ongoing support to Fiji’s national development priorities and scope of partnership, which has expanded over the years to include important areas such as climate change, disaster risk management, and the COVID-19 response effort.

He thanked Japan for its cooperation in providing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), life-saving medical equipment, and contributions to the COVAX Facility, which aided with the vaccination campaign rollout and, eventually, the reopening of Fiji’s international borders and economic recovery.

The Japanese foreign minister, for his part, stated that his visit to Fiji reflects the two nations’ long-standing friendship and collaboration, which has become stronger over time.

Both sides exchanged viewpoints on prospective areas of expanded collaboration in business, tourism, trade, education, health, security, disaster management, rural development, and infrastructure.
