More weaponry are being sent to Ukraine?

As hundreds of residents were evacuated from Mariupol’s beleaguered steelworks, the final pocket of resistance against Russian soldiers in the port city, US President Joe Biden announced another package of military support for Ukraine.

The newest security support, at $150 million, would include artillery ammunition and radars, according to Biden, as the country prepared for more bombardment by Moscow’s forces ahead of May 9, when Russia commemorates the Soviet triumph over the Nazis in World War II.

According to a senior US official, the help included counter-artillery radars and electronic jammer technology for locating the source of enemy fire.

The latest shipment puts the total worth of US weapons provided to Ukraine to $3.8 billion since the Russian incursion began.

“To empower Ukraine on the battlefield and at the negotiation table,” the president urged Congress to support a $33 billion plan that includes $20 billion in military aid.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon has disputed accusations that it assisted Ukrainian forces in sinking the Russian vessel Moskva last month in the Black Sea.

The US had “no previous knowledge” of the intention to attack the ship, which sunk with an unknown number of Russian sailors killed or missing, according to Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.

While giving military help to Ukraine, the US has tried to keep the entire nature of its assistance under wraps so as not to provoke Russia into a wider battle.

On Sunday, President Joe Biden, other G7 leaders, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet online to discuss Western support for Kyiv.
