Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut, described the filibuster as “anti-democratic” since Democrats now lack the numbers to overturn Roe v. Wade. However, he expects greater attention to abortion will “drive a lot of people to the polls” in November’s midterm elections.

“The filibuster, in my opinion, is inherently anti-democratic. “You definitely should be able to accomplish your plan if you gain control of the House, Senate, and White House,” Murphy said during an exclusive sit-down interview with “Fox News Sunday.”

“And you’d think the same thing if you were in the minority?” Bret Baier of Fox News challenged

“I would, and I believe it’s very apparent to me that if Republicans gain control of the Senate, they would repeal the filibuster in order to implement a nationwide abortion ban,” Murphy asserted. “They abolished the filibuster for Supreme Court justices with the express intent of installing judges who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

As a result, I believe it is reasonable to suppose they would amend the regulations in order to establish the nationwide abortion ban.”

Democrats have been lobbying for legislation to codify Roe v. Wade since a draft ruling leaked to Politico was made public last week, but conducting such a procedural vote would only serve to convey a political statement before the November elections since Senate Democrats lack the votes.

“Freedom now, it’s critical that we have every senator on record on whether they support a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body or believe the government should be in charge?” Murphy explained. “Because this isn’t going to be about state legislatures any time soon; this is going to be about passing a federal ban on abortions across the board.”

“If Republicans take control of the House, Senate, and White House, which is quite likely in the next three years,” the senator warned, “they will undoubtedly implement a nationwide ban on abortion that would affect every single family, every single woman in this country.”

Murphy predicted that the abortion debate will fuel voter turnout in November.

“I believe there will be a large turnout surge, but not only among Democrats or in the center of the country. In truth, the vast majority of Republicans in the United States reject the complete reversal of Roe v. Wade “he stated, “Ultimately, I believe this will drive a large number of people to the polls in November who might otherwise stay home because they know that this struggle is coming not just in state legislatures but also in Washington.”

He criticized threats of violence against Supreme Court justices but said that the “outrage here should be about what’s going to happen to women and families in this nation,” rather than the leak of the draft judgment.

“The fact that women and physicians will be immediately imprisoned if this perspective becomes a reality,” Murphy stated. “If, in these places with trigger laws, abortion becomes banned and criminalized under any circumstances, including rape and incest,” says the author.
