The State Department announced the reopening of the American embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, three months after it was closed.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated in a statement made Wednesday that even though embassy workers withdrew in the days before Russia attacked Ukraine, this had no influence on American support for the Ukrainian people. He stated that when the embassy was temporarily closed, the US “promised to maintain our help” and strive to reopen it in the future.
“That day has finally arrived,” Blinken stated. “Today marks the official resumption of activities at the US Embassy in Kyiv. The Ukrainian people have defended their motherland against Russia’s immoral assaults, and as a consequence, the Stars and Stripes are flying above the Embassy once more.”

Blinken stated that with the embassy’s reopening, the US had “proposed additional steps to improve the safety of our personnel.” as well as “improved our security methods and standards.” The US Embassy in Ukraine will shut down on April 25, 2022, in Kyiv, Ukraine. The secretary made it clear that this was not a declaration of victory.
“The war continues. Every day, Russia’s soldiers inflict death and damage on Ukrainian land,” he stated, referring to the millions of Ukrainians who have lost their homes and family members.
“We reaffirm our commitment to the people and government of Ukraine with vigor, and we look forward to carrying out our mission from the US Embassy in Kyiv,” he added.
