According to first responders, an avalanche of ice in the Italian Alps resulted in at least six fatalities and eight injuries.

The reporters also stated that, quoting rescuers, at least a dozen individuals however still unaccounted for following the collapse of Marmolada, the tallest mountain in the Dolomites.

A significant serac or section of ice collapsed on the Marmolada glacier, near the top. According to a tweet from the Alpine Rescue Service.

Additionally, it stated that all local Alpine rescue stations, including canine teams and at least five aircraft, had been activated.

The collapse of the serac however spotted by a worker at the nearby Castiglioni Marmolada Refuge. He told that he “heard a loud boom, typical of a landslide.
