Iran opposes UN drone probes
Calls for an investigation into the alleged use of drones of Iranian descent in Ukraine, according to the foreign ministry, are “false and unsubstantiated.”
According to its foreign ministry, Iran has vehemently rejected a request by France, Germany, and the United Kingdom for the UN to look into claims that Russia attacked Ukraine with drones of Iranian provenance.
The so-called E-3 group of nations’ call was “false and unjustified,” according to Nasser Kanaani, a spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, and it was “seriously rejected and condemned.”
Russian attack drones produced in Iran, the Shahed-136, are said to have been utilized by Russia, according to Ukraine.
“The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in its pursuit to protect its national interest and to secure the rights of the noble Iranian people, reserves the right to respond to any irresponsible action,” the Iranian foreign ministry website quoted Kanaani as saying.
“It will not hesitate to defend the interests of the Iranian people,” he said, without elaborating.
The three European nations backed Ukraine’s request for a UN investigation in a letter signed by their UN envoys on Monday, asserting that the use of drones violated UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which supported the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
