A Rs. 10 million award for Pakistani women has been awarded by two-time Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy through Patakha Pictures, a platform for funding and mentorship.

Their third mentoring program, “Stories from Southern Pakistan,” will enlist US and Scottish filmmakers as mentors

“I have been so inspired by the success of Patakha Pictures’ funding programmes, especially as many of our fellows’ films are being screened and receiving accolades internationally. At this groundbreaking juncture therefore, I feel extremely proud to be launching our third and largest-ever funding program for female filmmakers in Pakistan,” Sharmeen said.

“We know that this funding is critical for filmmakers to realise their filmmaking dreams and this time around, we’re making a special effort to recruit women from smaller towns and villages in Sindh and Balochistan,” she said.

The initiative, which was established in collaboration with Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) and the US Consulate General Karachi, will welcome interested female filmmakers with addresses in Sindh and Balochistan.

The training programme will be conducted online twice a month from January through August 2023. The workshops will combine seminars with sessions of professional consultation led by consultants from around the world.

The goal of atakha Pictures is to assist and develop a new generation of Pakistani women filmmakers who want to make thought-provoking films about social issues like women’s empowerment, violence against women and minorities, the arts, culture, climate change, and fostering peace.
