Shab-e-Barat 2023: ‘Night of Forgiveness’ to be observed with religious zeal

Shab-e-Barat, the ‘Night of Forgiveness’, will be observed with religious reverence across Pakistan on Tuesday night.

Shab-e-Barat is observed in mid-Shaban and falls this year on the night of March 7, 2023, in Pakistan.

On this particular night, the majority of faithful seek forgiveness from the Allah Almighty and atone for their misdeeds.

They prefer to keep fast on the next day to express submissiveness in the court of Allah Almighty and beg His countless blessings for both the worlds.

A large number of people hailing from all schools of thought pay homage at the graves of their loved ones on the sacred occasion.

What is Shab-e-Barat?

The Persian word ‘Shab’ refers to the night, whereas the Arabic word ‘Barat’ refers to deliverance and forgiveness.

Shab-e-Barat is widely celebrated throughout South Asia, including Pakistan. It is observed on the 14th and 15th nights of the Islamic month of Shaban.

Shab-e-Barat is one of Islam’s holiest occasions. Every year, Muslims make particular preparations for the festival.

Many Muslims believe that this is a holy night when Allah is more forgiving and that sincere prayers might help wash their sins away.

The night is also used to seek mercy for departed and ill family members. It believed  that Allah Al-Mighty determines people’s fortunes for the coming year, their subsistence, and whether they will be able to perform Hajj.

Shab-e-Barat has its own diverse traditions and customs. Many Muslims prepare sweet meals such as halwa and zarda to share with their neighbours, relatives, family members, and the needy.

Mosques are illuminated and offer recitations and announcements throughout the day before the night’s main activities.

The day also significance for Shia Muslims who observe the birth of Imam Mahdi (RA) on the day. Other Sunni Muslims believe that on this day, Allah spared the Ark of Hazrat Nuh (A.S.) from the deluge.
