Justice Shahid Karim heard the petition filed by citizen Haroon Farooq for remedying smog in the Lahore High Court, during which Commissioner Lahore Division Muhammad Ali Randhawa appeared before the court.
Commissioner Lahore told the court that action will be taken indiscriminately against smog-emitting vehicles and we have also directed the traffic police to stop smog-emitting vehicles.
The commissioner told the court “We have taken many steps for the trend of cycling, have talked to the Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency to make a track for cycling, will try to get things for cyclists at a discount in hotels and we will now advertise in the newspaper that cutting trees is a crime”.
On this, the court said “Now it seems we are going on the right path, PDMA is sleeping, we are waking them up, if any vehicle is causing smog, take pictures of it, from next year. We have to take big steps in the beginning and these two months are very important”.
The court asked the commissioner to involve the private sector and we can resume cycling in these five to six months.
The court ordered to sealing of the polluting factories and said that the owners of the sealed factories would give an affidavit that if the violation occurs again, the factory will be demolished.
Later, the court adjourned the hearing of the case till November 7.
