In an effort to tackle the growing backlog in vehicle registrations, the Punjab Excise Department is contemplating the introduction of virtual smart cards as an alternative solution. The move comes in the wake of recent delays in issuing physical registration cards, with citizens facing potential delays of up to a month.

Attributing the delays to issues within the tendering process, the Excise Department is actively working to resolve the situation. However, recognizing the urgency of the matter, the department has proposed the introduction of virtual smart cards as a means to streamline and expedite the registration process.

According to a local media outlet, the Excise Department has submitted a summary to the provincial government seeking approval for the implementation of virtual smart cards. Once approval is granted, citizens across the province will be able to opt for virtual smart cards as part of the vehicle registration process.

The virtual smart card system aims to provide a digital alternative to the traditional physical registration cards. Vehicle owners will have the option to obtain their virtual smart cards online after completing the necessary registration steps. The Excise Department will facilitate the download of these virtual smart cards through their official website.

In addition to the virtual smart card initiative, the Excise Department has recently introduced a doorstep service for vehicle registration. Interested citizens can avail of this service by dialing the Punjab Information Technology Board’s helpline at 080008786. Upon request, a representative from the department will visit the applicant’s doorstep to complete the registration process on the spot.

The introduction of virtual smart cards aligns with the department’s commitment to embracing technology to enhance efficiency and convenience for citizens. This digital solution not only addresses the current backlog but also offers a modern and accessible approach to the vehicle registration process.

As the Excise Department awaits government approval for the virtual smart card initiative, citizens are encouraged to stay informed about updates through official channels. The potential implementation of virtual smart cards marks a significant step toward a more streamlined and technologically advanced vehicle registration system in the province.
