Pakistani woman celebrates divorce with joyous dance, challenges stigma
In a bold statement against societal stereotypes, Pakistani woman Azima Ihsan celebrated her divorce with a spirited dance at a family wedding, emphasizing that “freedom” brings the happiness everyone deserves.
Azima, a mother of three, posted a video on Instagram of herself dancing to the Punjabi hit Maghron La, dressed in a traditional gharara. As her loved ones cheered, she joyfully embraced the moment, sending a strong message about breaking the stigma around divorced women.
“Divorced. Desi. Thriving.” she wrote in her caption, challenging the perception that divorce is a “death sentence” for women in Pakistani society. “I was told my life was over, I’d regret it, my life was going to go downhill, and happiness? Forget it. The judgment still comes, but guess what? I dance through it. I laugh through it,” she expressed.

Azima admitted that she never wanted a divorce but had to make the difficult decision for the well-being of herself and her children. “Marriages should be built on love and respect, not fear of stigma,” she stated, encouraging women to stand up for themselves.
Now independent, Azima takes pride in earning her own income and living life on her terms, declaring herself her own “favorite.”
