Prime Minister Imran Khan will chair a meeting of the Federal Cabinet. The government will decide over increasing the prices of wheat and likely to approve the railways’ restructuring plan.

According to the details, the federal cabinet meeting will discuss the overall political and economic situation of the country.

Moreover, the meeting is likely to approve the proposed restructuring and revival plan for Pakistan Railways (PR) mainly to improve its performance.
It may be noted that the Supreme Court, in an earlier hearing of the case on 9th July 2020, had given a month’s time to Planning Commission (with effect from 20th Aug) to submit a report on the PR structure. The Supreme Court of Pakistan while giving the order of restructuring in Pakistan Railways, sought progress report revival of the Karachi Circular Railway from the railways.

Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed headed the bench that was hearing a suo moto case pertaining to financial losses in the Railway department.

The top court had raised serious questions on the performance of Pakistan Railways, noting that its employees are “not fit to operate the department”.

It should be noted that the Pakistan Railways (PR) is one of the largest public sector enterprises in the country. It currently employs 68,750 people across the country and for the financial year 2019-20, it had a total budgetary outlay of Rs97.74 billion.
