The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested the former managing director (MD) and former director of Human Resources (HR) of National Airlines (PIA) for allegedly hiring a Pakistani-American citizen in a senior position in the airline.

According to the FIA, the former MD violated the relevant rules of the airline and hired a foreign Pakistani at an attractive salary.

Deputy Director FIA Abdul Rauf Sheikh said that the FIA Corporate Crime Circle arrested former PIA MD Ijaz Haroon and former director HR Hanif Pathan on charges of illegal appointment.

He said that the FIA had registered an FIR against two suspects and former DMD (Deputy Managing Director) Saleem Sayani in the year 2020.

He said that the suspects had appointed Saleem Sayani as DMD in PIA in violation of PIA HR rules.

A senior FIA official claimed that Saleem Sayani was a Pakistani-American.

According to the FIA, Saleem Sayani was appointed on an attractive salary of US 20 20,000 per month and was also offered other facilities and benefits.

Explaining the details of compensation and benefits, the FIA ​​official said that in addition to the said monthly salary, he was allowed to stay in a five-star hotel for five months and his family was also provided accommodation in Dubai at the expense of PIA. Was

Abdul Rauf Sheikh revealed that the illegal appointment of Saleem Sayani in the PIA caused a loss of Rs. 20-25 crore to the national exchequer.

It may be recalled that in the hearing of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) privatization deficit case in the Supreme Court in January this year, Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed had made harsh remarks and said that cases of fake degrees would be heard here and fake degrees. Employees will be fired one by one.

During the hearing, the lawyer of the national airline Naeem Bukhari said that debt of Rs 426 billion has been incurred on PIA.

During the hearing in the court, the Chief Justice asked whether PIA was buying new aircraft or not, to which the lawyer replied that if PIA had money, it would buy the aircraft.

It should be noted that in the year 2018, the then Chief Justice Saqib Nisar had taken suo motu notice on the case of recruitment on fake degrees in PIA.

The PIA has since sacked 467 staff members, while more than 201 former employees have sought restraining orders from the courts.

It should be noted that 16 pilots were also among the crew fired on fake degrees.
