Major Muhammad Akram is being remembered on his 49th martyrdom anniversary today (Saturday).

A ceremony was held at the memorial of the martyr in Jhelum to pay homage to the great sacrifice.

According to Inter-services Public Relation (ISPR), Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa laid a wreath at the memorial of Major Akram Shaheed.

Earlier, ISPR paid tribute to the martyred. The Army’s media wing hailed Major Akram’s bravery.

Who was Major Muhammad Akram?

Shaheed Major Akram was born on April 4, 1938, in Dinga district of Gujarat. He joined the Frontier Force Regiment of the Pakistan Army.

He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1965, served in the Zafarwal Sector in the 1965 Pak-India War and was promoted to Major in 1970.

Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed is one of the veteran officers of the Pakistan Army who sacrificed his life for the defence of the motherland.

District Dinajpur in East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh) was martyred in the 1971 war while defending its territory.

In the same war, on the front line of Hali area of ​​East Pakistan, Major Muhammad Akram, under the command of his Frontier Force, stopped the advance of the Indian Army many times more than himself for five consecutive days and five nights and made a fatal mistake of the enemy. Also remembered by the title of ‘Hero of Haley’.

In recognition of his courage, Major Muhammad Akram was awarded the ‘Nishan-e-Haider’ by Pakistan Army.

Major Muhammad Akram was martyred on December 5, 1971, while fighting valiantly against the enemy. The martyr was awarded the highest military honour, Nishan Haider.

Major Muhammad Akram, who was martyred at the age of 31 years and 8 months, was buried in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), but a memorial was later erected in his native Jhelum
